Teachable Moments

I love creating teachable moments. I created one today with my son. I started munching on some Utz plain potato chips and I could taste the potato. It seemed like there were very few ingredients used to make the chips. I read the ingredient label and the only ingredients were potatoes, vegetable oil and one more oil….simple ingredients.

I showed my son the simple ingredients and I explained, “the fewer the ingredients a product has, the healthier it is”, generally speaking.

I said, “Let’s take a look at this bag of Hot Fries.” Sure enough there were what looked like 20-25 ingredients with weird names. That’s another thing, if you can’t pronounce the name of the ingredient, it’s typically not good for you.

Try doing this with different foods the next time you go to the grocery store with your kids. I challenge you and your kids to try options that have fewer ingredients in them over some you may typically purchase. Then take notice of the taste and how eating these new foods make you feel after eating them.

Come back and post a comment to let me know how it went!
