Has Laundry Taken Over Your Home?

My husband and I have differing philosophies on folding clothes and today I want to know your thoughts on this subject.

My husband grew up having to fold his clothes neatly…so neat that they look ironed. He was taught this by his mom, his nanny and in the boarding schools he attended. Although I did not grow up having to fold clothes, my mother told me stories about how a good housewife was expected to neatly fold clothes and iron the underwear and sheets. I know some of you have heard this too!

Me on the other hand, I feel clothes should be folded neat enough to look good in the closet and so they can be stacked neatly for ease of finding things. I am not interested in having the look of crisply ironed sheets when I open my closet. I feel my time is better used on other chores or tasks that can get my family ahead financially and tasks that will allow me to spend more time with my family. My children complain when I am busy cleaning. They want my attention. So, if I tried folding 7 loads of laundry “the right way” it would be exhausting. In fact, my husband can only get as far as folding the towels when he sits down to fold clothes “the right way”.

In summary, my husband feels we should ensure our children fold their clothes “the right way” because it carries over into their overall neatness. Me, I understand where my husband is coming from; however, I feel we can teach our kids neatness via other tasks like making up their beds and keeping their rooms clean.

What is your take on this? How do you handle the laundry folding in your home? Are you guilty of not folding and instead leaving laundry on the sofa? Do you iron and precisely fold everything? Or, do you fold your clothes just good enough?

  1. I have to agree with you me personally I like to fold them neat enough where they fit properly in a drawer and look nice in the closet. Doing that method does not take me that long and still looks nice to me. I dont think ironing or folding so neat is necessary I mean when you wear the clothes you will more than likely iron them again which is a waste of time. I do believe in ironing clothes the night before. To be honest I think teaching children general cleanliness such as keeping your bathroom, room and kitchen clean and making your bed everyday and general hygiene such as brushing your teeth and washing your face twice a day will help them to be neat overall. Also implementing when to deep clean your house and stuff like that should be sufficient. We are only granted a small amount of time during the day especially considering our work schedules so your time could definitely be spent on other things that are more gratifying to you and your family. I also think that teaching them to keep their overall appearance up is apart of being neat, honestly I dont think folding close military neat will contribute to that. Also I have never heard of ironing underwear lol.
